Trainspotting is a hobby for real boneheads. Equipped with binoculars, papers and pens they sit by a strategically point looking after the trains passing by. The meaning of it is to see so many unusual trains as possible. Note their official designation in a common notebook. You can compare it with collecting registration numbers.

The hobby in the movie Trainspotting is not to spot trains or cars, but to inject heroin.
