Dark Tranquillity's debut album isn't quite what you expect, instead
of their regular "Swedish west coast melodic death metal" you get some
very melodic black metal with a high degree of variation.
Music is fast as hell but there's lots, LOTS of melody here and acoustic
guitars appear here and there.
Anders Fridén, the current vocalist of In Flames, does vocals and I can't
complain although the stuff he did with IF is way better.
On "A bolt of blazing gold" and "Through ebony archways" things hit their
peak when Mikael Stanne, who's already in the band (doing guitars) does
some clean vocals (oohhhh yeah!!), together with a chick. I just wish
Fridén didn't come in with his grunty vox cause it destroys the mood set
up, in a way.
For those who haven't heard Stanne's clean voice before I can inform you
that his tone is very... melancholic, and it's always great cause this
guy really can sing.
This cd also contains the mini cd "Of chaos and eternal night" which features
Mikael Stanne (current vocalist) on lead vocals instead of guitars.
They probably released the mini cd just cause they had a new singer and
wanted to show what he's like before the next studio album comes out.
Anyway on the mini, the music has evolved and now they aren't black
metal anymore the style has turned into what it is today, the very
popular swedish melodic death metal. This mini cd has 3 totally new tracks
and 1 re-recorded version of a track from the debut, "Alone" but now with -
Stanne on vocals.
