"See me in the winter rain
Struggling to keep straigh
See me when the cockpit's hot
With a wind-burnt smiling face
Don't se me with any other reason
To be blasting through the lanes
Only see me in my Seven
Being happy with the day" (Chris Rea)
My Seven and me
Some 25 year ago I was visiting the local garage in the village where I lived in those days.
The bloke who worked in the garage was washing his car. And what a car,
a small nimble yellow one with more appeal than you ever ask for. Ever
since I have been determined that one day I shall own a Lotus Seven. A
couple of years ago the time was here: I had a house with a garage to keep
the Seven in, the right amount of money to buy it, and an understanding
(?) wife. For me it was important that it was a genuine Lotus and not a
replica. The problem was to find one, there are not many Lotus Sevens available
in Sweden. So I had to make a little compromise, and consider Caterhams
as well. Caterham is after all almost as genuine as a "real" Lotus.
After making several
phone calls all over Sweden I finally found a car that was worth looking
at, some 650 km from home. A friend and I made a return trip in one l.o.n.g
Sunday, and the car was almost exactly as I wanted it; BRG and ali, clam
shells, right hand drive, de Dion, Brooklands and so on. Also it was very
well built, and in a good shape. I returned home as a happy owner of a
1987 Caterham Seven.
