Part Five : "Dark Clouds Arising"

[This part is a short one, but never the less... : ) ]

"Oh look how cute she is!" Jessie shot a begging look at her father and Dr. Quest.

"Oh no, Jess, you're NOT gonna keep her!" Race knew her daughter well, too well. Jessie pouted her lips.

Hammond chuckled. "Oh my dear, I'm afraid it's absolutely out of the question. She wouldn't be happy in such a strange new environment. But maybe... who knows, somewhere in the future..." he blinked with his eye.

Hammond took the little dinosaur from her and lightly stroke his hand against its head before he put it back in the nest.

"Come, let's go on", he said, with warmth in his voice, affectionately looking at the baby-dino, rolling up to sleep.

Hammond showed them a great deal of the premises, and his guests was amazed of avereything they saw, thinking of the tremendous hard work Hammond must have had out here.

It must have cost millions, Jonny thought. Still, I bet he's gonna make a preeetty nice profit on it.

He suddenly yawned, and realized that he was tired. Not so physically as mentally. Seeing all they had seen that day was really pushing his mind to its limits. He figured he'd had enough excitement for one day. Surprised by admitting to himself that he could ever have enough of excitement, he was glad when Jessie announced that she was ready to call it a day.

"Can we see more of the park tomorrow?" Jessie looked hopefully at Hammond.

"Certainly, my dear. As much as you'd like." Hammond said. "THIS is why I built this place. For you, and for people like you. I wish you a good nights sleep, I am well aware that this day have been very demanding for you all."

The three teens said their good-nights and went back to their rooms. But they didn't go to sleep. They all sat cuddled up in Jonnys bed, talking about the events of the day.

"I still don't really believe it", Jessie said. "It's like death don't exist no more. You could clone anything you want back into life."

"Yeah, just imagine. They could revive Elvis, or Kennedy. Or John Lennon. Wow, this technology's really slammin'!"

Hadji sat on the bed, not quite sharing his friends excitement. "But think what would happen if this technology came into the wrong hands? And, besides, I feel that just because they CAN do it, does that necessarily mean that they SHOULD do it?"

"Aw come on, Hadj! What's with the pessimism? You can't say that you don't think it's amazing too!"

Hadji shook his head. "Amazing, for sure. But this is a enormous amount of Power we have here. What if that power got loose?"

"REALLY, Hadj, ya sure knows how to sink a mood! Well, that's it, I'm in for the night. Get your butts of my bed, I'll see you tomorrow, okay?"

"Sure. Maybe we could go swimming or something. There are some great beaches here, I saw them when we came here."

"Yeah, whatever. We'll think of something. G'night!"

Jessie and Hadji went into their respective rooms, but none of them found sleeping easy that night.

Wonder what the guys in school will say when I tell them THIS! Jonny thought smugly before his mind floated away from reality and into the realm of dreams.

The next morning, they all woke early, jumping out of bed to meet the new day. They had decided to go swimming, and Peter Hunt gave them a ride.

"Ya sure ya'll be alright?"

"Yeah, no problem. We'll stay here for a couple of hours, and then we go home through the park. The predators ARE held separately, right?"

"Right, but still, I'm not sure I should let you do this. IF something happens, it's my butt that goes down."

"Don't worry, nothing's gonna happen. We'll be careful and won't get too close to the dinos, promise."

The warden looked judgingly at them, arms crossed over his chest. "Well, alright then. But be sure to go straight back to the base, okay?"

"You bet. Thanks for the ride."

"Enjoy the swim, bye." Peter got in the car and disappeared down the road.

The teens spent the next hours swimming and diving. The water was clear and had a deep blue color, and it had just the right temperature for diving. Later, when they soaking wet got up on the shore, they all panted of exertion.

"Wow, that was great!" Jonny exclaimed as he dried himself with a towel.

"Yes, it is definitely a 'Surfer's Paradise'." Hadji said, putting his shirt on, leaving the turban off in the heat.

"What do you say we get going?" Jessie was wrapped in a towel, trying to dry her long thick hair that had taken on a deep copper-red tone. "It must be a good bit after noon."

Jonny looked up at the sky. "Yeah, well, whatever the time is, it's definitely high time to get back." He pointed to the south-east. "Look, there's bad weather commin' up. If we don't get under shelter, we'll be soaked again in an hour."

Jessie looked up. "You're right. Lets get moving."

They quickly gathered their stuff and began the walk back.

Meanwhile. . .

Okey, it's time to get busy. Let's see, I got seven minutes to get the embryos; the security system breakdown should start right about.... NOW!

A figure hastily walked down the hall, to a steel door with a sign "Embryo Cold Storage". It pushed the door open, with no alarm going of, and quickly went over to the nitrogen-tank containing the frozen embryos.

It turned the top wheel and opened the tank; white streaks of frozen nitrogen gas trickeling out and down on the floor while it removed a number of tubes from the rack - each tube having a small label: Triceratops, Stegosaur, Gallimimus, Brachiosaur and so on.

One tube of each kind disappeared into a packeting cylinder, looking like a thermos jug. Finally, it took the tubes named Tyrannosaur Rex and Velociraptor, and quickly stored them in the cylinder with the others.

The figure checked its wristwatch. Good, he had another forty minutes to get out of the base and down to the rendez-vous point. And with the bug in the computersystem, the others would have enough things to worry about not to look for him. Oh yes, he would be on his way to Venezuela long before they even missed him.
And he would be filthy rich.

Alan Richter smiled evilly as he sneaked down the hall towards the exit, clutching the precious steel cylinder with both hands.
