Three points were gained from nothing,
when it ended Skjutet two and Virgo one. Neither
Keats nor Burns would with all their poetic abilities be able
to embellish this match. As usual when Skjutet play this way,
the conditions were close to perfect. No wind and mild temperature.
This is something all devoted Skjutet-supporters around the world
know by now, since it has so many times become apparent that it
is necessary with wind, hard rain or snow and cold weather to
bring out the best play from the green-white team. Tonight's non-entertaining
battle ended 2-1, with all goals scored in the first half. The
first twenty minutes might just have been the dullest ever played
on this pitch. Usually when a match is this free from structure
and this full of bad passing, it brings out individual skills
instead. This showed in the 23rd minute when Patrik Larsson made
himself two-dimensional and slipped past two defenders and placed
the ball in the right corner for the lead. Again this talented
player broke the deadlock with a solo effort. Shortly thereafter
Skjutet's weak point showed again: high balls played into the
box. After the initial defensive header by Johan Damgaard, Skjutet
were inable to pick up the loose ball, and Virgo put away the
equaliser. The last ten minutes of the first half Virgo had a
number of chances, including a one-on-one breakaway, but Jerker
Kihlstedt in the Skjutet-goal kept the match even. Just before
halftime when a Virgo-defender tried to dribble as the last man,
Jesper Palmqvist stole the ball, and fired a 65ft.-shot over the
keepers arms and neatly under the crossbar for the lead.
The second half showed some improvements, but it was as if it
was now far too late for it make any significant difference. Still,
on three occasions the crowd had a reason to lift their eyebrows
slightly. First was when Skjutet had a freekick just outside the
penalty area, to the right. Johan Damgaard fired a sharp leftfoot
that hit the left post, and Henrik Grehn was quickly there to
pound the rebound just under the crossbar for the goal. This goal
stood for about two seconds, until the referee whistled for offside.
Second, Skjutet got a penalty after Johan Damgaard was brought
down in the box. Now, Oskar Olsson had won the penalty shoot-out
for the honors to take the first penalty of the season during
practice, but since he was ill today, the responsibility instead
went to Jesper Palmqvist, who finished second in the shoot-out.
Self-assured he fired his Dutch 'Neeskens-penalty' hard in the
middle of the goal, but he didn't get the preferred height this
time, which was something the excellent Virgo-keeper took advantage
of, when he managed to keep a couple of his toes in the centre
as he dove to the left, thus saving the shot. The rebound came
straight out, but apparently being without a left foot Palmqvist
managed to miss half the ball and nothing came out of it. Disgrace.
Skjutet has not converted on a penalty kick in a long time now.
The third situation was when Patrik Spång headed distinctly
down towards the near corner on a ball in from the left, but the
keeper made what must have been the save of the match. What comes
to mind, is Gordon Banks' save from Pelé's classic header.
Skjutet also picked up three yellow cards, apart from the three
points. Today's referee was just slightly better than the quality
of the match. On numerous occasions he had no idea what his decision
was to be. Then it is vital to remember on what terms we are playing.
This is, after all, division 7
